Politicians of both parties are escaping the DC heat and humidity for the month-long August recess, while President Barack Obama is scaling back his public event schedule as his campaign continues fundraising activities. While the American economy continues its historical decline, 81 congressmen are going to an all-expenses paid vacation to Israel. Nearly one in five members of the House of Representatives will use their summer recess period to visit Israel. Of the 81 making the trip, 55 are Republican and 26 are Democrats. Almost all of the week-long trips are sponsored by the American Israel Education Foundation, which promotes these trips every other August. The foundation describes itself as “America’s leading pro-Israel lobby.” Some have criticized congress for causing the credit downgrading in the first place, by being gridlocked for too long and playing politics instead of compromising for the good of the nation.
